The city of Hamburg is set to embark on a significant expansion of its public transport network with the construction of a new U-Bahn line, U5, scheduled to begin in 2029. One of the key stations along this line will be the Arenen Volkspark station, designed to cater to major events and better connect the industrial area of Schnackenburgallee and residential areas in Stellingen to the rapid transit network.

The Arenen Volkspark station will feature a generously designed plaza, providing a direct connection to the arenas, the Volksparkstadion, and the Barclays Arena. The station's architecture, a collaboration between the Hamburg office of blrm architects and AZC Atelier ZΓΌndel Cristeria, aims to set a distinctive mark.

The station will have 12 staircases and 4 elevators, ensuring easy access for all passengers. During events, an additional platform will be opened at the station. To accommodate peak passenger numbers, a turnaround and parking facility is being built alongside the station. This will enable the U5 to transport sufficient passengers efficiently.

The design of the station emphasises the separation of visitor flows and the creation of a safe route without crossing streets. The roof of the station will be fully glazed, allowing in plenty of daylight and serving as a photovoltaic power plant. The station's roof will be a widely visible suspended wooden structure, resembling a festival tent, and will be a striking addition to the Hamburg skyline.

The western endpoint of the new U-Bahn Line U5, the Arenen Volkspark station, is an important milestone in the expansion project. The line will span approximately 25 kilometers, connecting Bramfeld through the city center to the west. A total of 22 new stations will be created, seven of which will offer transfer possibilities to existing U- and S-Bahn lines.

Construction of the Arenen Volkspark station is set to begin in 2029. The aim is to complete the project and begin operation of the new U5 line by 2032. From Hamburg's city center, the Arenen Volkspark station will be reachable in around 20 minutes, making it a convenient addition to the city's transport network. The station will have two operating modes: one for everyday use and one for events, ensuring smooth operation and passenger flow at all times.
