UAE Unveils Fifth Account on Secure Nuclear Waste Management Practices
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) showcased its commitment to nuclear safety, regulatory advancements, and waste management strategies at the 8th Review Meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.
The UAE's delegation, led by Ambassador Hamad Al Kaabi, the Permanent Representative to the IAEA, presented the country's fifth national report on compliance with the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and Radioactive Waste Management.
The report highlighted the UAE's dedication to adhering to international best practices in nuclear safety, regulatory advancements, and waste management. Ambassador Al Kaabi stated that the report outlines key legislative and regulatory measures, including regulations issued by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) on radiation protection, facility decommissioning, and waste disposal.
One of the significant developments mentioned in the report was the granting of a license by FANR to the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) in 2023 to select a site for a facility managing low-level radioactive waste. FANR had also approved a site selection license for a low-level radioactive waste management facility in the same year.
The report also detailed the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, operated by ENEC. The plant features a spent fuel storage system capable of holding fuel for 20 years before transitioning to dry storage.
The UAE regulates over 4,000 licensees in the medical and industrial sectors, following FANR guidelines for storage and transport of radioactive materials. The Emirati workforce development in the nuclear sector is a significant focus, with a high percentage of Emiratis, including women, holding leadership roles. In fact, 76% of FANR's workforce are Emiratis, with 45% of them being women, and 58% holding leadership roles.
The UAE continues to uphold its commitment to nuclear safety, environmental protection, and global collaboration as a signatory to the Joint Convention. The delegation included representatives from FANR, ENEC, and other national stakeholders.
The UAE's efforts in the nuclear sector reflect its vision for a sustainable and innovative future, underscoring its position as a global leader in nuclear safety and waste management.
