Ukraine: Western Components Found in Moscow Origin
In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, tensions have reached a new high in recent days.
According to Russian authorities, a fire broke out in an oil depot in the Russian border region of Belgorod following a drone attack. Meanwhile, Ukraine has warned that Russia is preparing its missiles for a possible war with NATO. These warnings come as Russia launched more rockets and drones overnight from Saturday to Sunday than ever before in the more than three and a half years since the start of the war.
The Ukrainian National Guard has been active in the conflict zone, destroying over 100 ammunition depots at the front in the past month and disabling hundreds of Russian vehicles and artillery systems. The government also expects strengthening air defense to be a key goal at the Ukraine contact group meeting.
The use of Western components in Russian weapons systems has been a point of concern. The ballistic Iskander rocket fired by Russia at the Ukrainian government seat contained parts from the US, UK, Switzerland, and Japan, according to available sources. Similarly, the missile that struck the Ukrainian government building primarily originated from several Western countries via commercial microelectronic components, including those from China.
The Western response to these developments has been firm. Germany and France are pushing for EU sanctions against the Russian oil giant Lukoil and its trading subsidiary Litasco. The proposed sanctions also include sanctions against refineries in third countries involved in Russian oil exports to the EU, sanctions against companies trading in Russian oil, and punishing companies that help Moscow circumvent sanctions.
The countries also propose taking action against businesses involving cryptocurrency in Central Asia. The US Treasury Secretary is hinting at new sanctions against Russia and is ready to take strong measures, but only if European partners fully join them.
Unfortunately, the human toll of this conflict continues to rise. Numerous people have been killed and injured in Russian attacks in several regions of Ukraine, including the Charkiv, Donetsk, Kherson regions, and Saporischschja. In a tragic incident, a man was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian Black Sea city of Sochi, according to local authorities.
At the same time, Russia is increasingly isolating itself from the West as a result of the Ukraine war. The planned withdrawal from the European anti-torture convention could lead to a dangerous escalation for the human rights situation in Russia.
In a separate development, Italy's justice system will decide whether a suspect will be extradited to Germany for allegedly participating in the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines.
The Kremlin dismisses the impact of new sanctions being discussed by Western allies of Ukraine. However, the escalating tensions and the use of Western components in Russian weapons systems suggest that the situation remains volatile and requires close monitoring.
