Ukraine's President, Zelenskyy, expresses gratitude towards Turkey for their commitment to playing a prominent part in the pursuit of peace in Ukraine.
In a post following the fifth "Coalition of the Willing" summit in Paris, Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz emphasized Turkey's readiness to contribute to the diplomatic process for Ukraine. The summit, convened by U.S. President Donald Trump, was hosted in a hybrid format by French President Emmanuel Macron.
During the meeting, Yilmaz reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to prioritizing diplomacy and dialogue between the parties involved in the conflict. He also stated Turkey's willingness to play an active part in international efforts to achieve a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Yilmaz further proposed that Turkey could host a peace summit for Ukraine, aiming to facilitate negotiations and humanitarian progress. This role, as a key mediator and facilitator, is one that Turkey has assumed in previous rounds of direct peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv in Istanbul, leading to some humanitarian progress such as prisoner exchanges. Both sides, including Russia, have regarded Turkey as a reliable and trusted partner in this mediation process.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation to meet in Moscow, stating that the proposal appeared aimed at obstructing rather than enabling genuine peace talks.
In addition to the Ukraine conflict, leaders at the summit discussed ways to coordinate international action to intensify economic pressure on both Russia and China. Trump urged European leaders to stop purchasing Russian oil and accused China of helping finance Moscow's war. He also pressed for a united response from the leaders regarding the oil purchases and economic pressure on China.
It was reported that Russia earned about $1.2 billion from European oil sales, highlighting the potential economic impact of such sanctions.
In light of these developments, Turkey's role as a mediator in the Ukraine peace talks continues to be significant, as the country seeks to facilitate dialogue and diplomacy in the pursuit of a just and lasting peace.
