In August 2025, Ukraine's defence forces reported significant successes in their ongoing conflict with Russian forces. The enemy was employing a 'creeping' tactic, using small infantry groups to infiltrate settlements and avoid clashes. However, the Ukrainian forces managed to counter this strategy effectively.

Ukrainian forces regained control over 58 square kilometres of territory in August, according to reports. The exact details of the settlements regained were not provided, but it is known that the village of Zarichne in the Lyman hromada of Donetsk Oblast was among those liberated.

On the Pokrovsk front, the Russians gained 5 square kilometres, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to regain 26 square kilometres. Similarly, on the Dobropillia front, the Russians captured 13.5 square kilometres but lost 25.5 square kilometres in August.

Russia's plans for a breakthrough in the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad area and an offensive in Zaporizhzhia Oblast collapsed in August, while their plans to break through in Donetsk Oblast were also thwarted.

The transition to a corps-based command system is being finalised in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Army corps have been assigned sectors of responsibility and authority, aiming to streamline command and control.

Ukrainian drones struck more than 67,000 targets in August, and the effectiveness of the Middle Strike programme increased by 25%. Deep Strike weapons have also been used, striking 60 targets in Russian territory, including fuel production facilities, ammunition depots, air defence systems, and transport infrastructure.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander-in-chief, praised the professionalism, resilience, dedication, and courage of Ukrainian forces. Despite the enemy having a threefold advantage in terms of manpower and equipment, Syrskyi noted the Ukrainian forces' resilience. According to reports, Russian losses totaled 28,790 personnel in August, and since the beginning of 2025, 297,350 troops have been killed or wounded.

There were no territorial losses on the Huliaipole and Prydniprovske fronts in August, and Ukrainian forces retook another 4 square kilometres on the North Slobozhanshchyna front.
