Genea Data Breach: Stolen Data Appears on Dark Web

In a concerning turn of events, Australian IVF company Genea has confirmed that sensitive data from its systems has been published on the dark web. The breach, attributed to the Termite ransomware group, has left many individuals affected, with contact details, Medicare card numbers, medical histories, test results, and medications potentially exposed.

The Australian Government is working closely with Genea to respond to the incident and provide support to the victims. The support package includes counselling services and the assistance of IDCARE, Australia's national identity and cyber support service.

Genea is taking proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with the data breach. They have obtained a court-ordered injunction to prohibit any access, use, dissemination, or publication of the impacted data. This injunction remains in effect.

The company is also notifying affected patients and staff about the cyber incident. As of now, it is not known if financial data such as credit card details were taken. The Australian Federal Police have been notified of the incident and are conducting an investigation.

Michelle McGuinness, Australia's National Cyber Security Coordinator, has expressed distress over the incident. The identity of the person or group working with her in connection with the incident has not been publicly disclosed.

Genea has ensured that a support package is available to those impacted by the incident. They are engaging with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, the Australian Federal Police, the National Cyber Security Coordinator, and the Australian Cyber Security Centre regarding the incident.

The company continues to notify affected individuals and is urging them to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities. The support package for those impacted by the incident, including counselling services, remains available.
