Unauthorized driver inaugurates construction bridge without valid license
In the heart of Berlin, several bridges are undergoing renovation and rebuilding, aiming to improve the city's infrastructure and ensure safety for its commuters.
The Wuhletal bridge, located near one of the city's largest industrial areas, covering around 300 hectares, is scheduled to be completed in October 2025. Originally opened in 1987, the bridge consisted of precast concrete girders, but it has developed numerous structural defects over the years, including stress corrosion cracking and construction-related defects. The demolition and rebuilding of the Wuhletal bridge were completed in approximately four years, considered fast for a project in Berlin. The new Wuhletal bridge, which consists of twelve steel girders and a concrete slab, is 39.7 meters long and 22.5 meters wide.
Another bridge undergoing renovation is the Mühlendamm bridge in Mitte, which has been spanning the Spree since 1968. Scheduled for renewal by 2029, the bridge contains Hennigsdorfer prestressing steel that has become cracked. To ensure safety, the western superstructure of the bridge will be monitored by sensors. The order for the new construction of the Mühlendamm bridge's western half will be issued soon, allowing for its demolition and rebuilding.
Meanwhile, the tram bridge at the Marzahn junction is in poor condition and is scheduled to be permanently closed and demolished soon. The Marzahn junction, where the Landsberger Allee crosses the Märkische Allee and the Berlin outer ring road, will remain a construction site until 2029.
The Elsen bridge between Treptow and Friedrichshain had to be closed due to a 28-meter-long and up to 14-centimeter-deep crack in the prestressed concrete. A temporary bridge has been operating at the Elsen bridge since 2020, and the western superstructure is scheduled to be completed before Christmas 2025, which will triple capacity to three lanes per direction.
In the easternmost district of Berlin, the southern Blumberger Damm bridge is scheduled to be completed in October 2025. This bridge will cross the tracks of the S5 and the regional railway line RB26, making it important for traffic into neighboring Brandenburg.
As many engineering structures in Berlin come under scrutiny due to issues like cracks, rust, and broken joints, the city is investing heavily in renovation and rebuilding projects to maintain its infrastructure and ensure the safety of its commuters. While these projects may cause temporary inconveniences, they are essential for the long-term well-being of the city. The name of the engineer leading the reconstruction of the Wuhletal Bridge in Berlin is not publicly available.
