Unauthorized eSIM fraud is preying upon Indian users: Understanding the modus operandi and preventive measures
In a digital age where convenience reigns supreme, a new form of cybercrime is on the rise - eSIM scams. These scams allow cybercriminals to carry out remote transactions without the victim's knowledge, causing significant financial loss and disruption of network signal.
Recent reports indicate an increase in eSIM scams targeting users across all age groups, not just in India but also in Germany. Scammers are employing various tactics, such as fake activation calls and phishing messages, to trick unsuspecting victims into clicking on malicious links or sharing sensitive details.
One common method is for scammers to share a fraudulent eSIM activation link via SMS or email. Clicking on such a link can deactivate the victim's physical SIM card, transfer the mobile number to the attacker's device, and disrupt network signal. Once the mobile number is transferred, all calls, SMS, and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) go directly to the fraudsters.
The eSIM scam is faster than traditional physical SIM scams, making it a more immediate threat. With OTP access, cybercriminals can reset passwords, approve UPI payments, and transfer funds without the need for an ATM card or net banking login.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has reported a surge in such scams, urging users to be cautious of SIM upgrades or eSIM activation messages. They advise users to verify any such messages directly with their telecom operator before taking any action.
In Germany, efforts to combat eSIM fraud include implementing strong customer authentication procedures, tightening legal protections for consumers, and involving authorities such as the Bundesnetzagentur to monitor and sanction suspicious activities. Consumers are also encouraged to report fraudulent numbers and transactions promptly to enhance prevention.
