Uncapped brother of New Zealand's star all-rounder achieves List A career-high knock of 100 runs against South Africa A
New Zealand A secured a consolation victory in the series against South Africa A, winning a thrilling match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on September 4.
Dale Phillips, the younger brother of New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips, was the star of the show for New Zealand A. Phillips, who works as a professional cricketer, scored his second List A century for the team. This century was his second in the series, having previously scored a century in the third unofficial ODI against South Africa A.
Phillips reached the century off just 68 balls, setting a solid foundation for New Zealand A's innings. He made 147 runs in total in List A matches, with an impressive average of 32.00 and a strike rate of 87.43. In the same match, Curtis Heaphy scored an unbeaten 30 runs, while Muhammad Abbas also contributed with 66 runs.
Jayden Lennox was the pick of New Zealand's bowlers, taking 2 wickets for 36 runs. Tshepo Moreki removed Rhys Mariu in the first over of New Zealand A's innings, but Phillips and Joe Carter put on 135 runs for the second wicket, giving New Zealand A a strong start.
South Africa A scored 348-5 in their 50 overs, with Jordan Hermann scoring an unbeaten century. New Zealand A were 18 runs ahead of the DLS par score when rain forced an early finish, securing a much-needed win for the team.
This win gave New Zealand A a consolation victory in the series, with South Africa A dominating the majority of the matches. Phillips' performances throughout the series have been a highlight, and he will be hoping to continue his good form in future matches.
