The police in Lisbon have since confirmed the identity of the German citizen who was initially reported as one of the fatal victims. It appears that the injured person is indeed the man from Hamburg. The relatives of the injured man showed a policeman a photo of the relative in Lisbon, which led to the identification. The man was subsequently identified as an unidentified injured person in a hospital.

Meanwhile, the boy's 45-year-old mother is in critical but stable condition in the hospital of Santa Maria in Lisbon. The cause of the accident on the historic railway is currently under investigation, as such an incident has never occurred before. The Foreign Office has now clarified that no Germans are among the 16 dead.
