Uncertainty looms for Mercedes in Ludwigsfelde, as revealed in Brandenburg.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Ludwigsfelde, Brandenburg, has been facing an uncertain future as the company plans to phase out the production of Sprinter models by the end of 2029. Around 2,000 employees produce Sprinters with open body variants at the Ludwigsfelde plant, and their jobs are now at risk.

In May 2023, Mercedes-Benz announced a realignment of its vans business, aiming to reduce costs and improve competitiveness in electromobility. As part of this restructuring, the production of e-Sprinter models will be relocated from Ludwigsfelde to Poland.

The state government of Brandenburg sees uncertainties regarding the future of the Sprinter series production by Mercedes-Benz in Ludwigsfelde. In response to a query from the CDU state parliamentary group, the state government's response was consistent with discussions between the state government and representatives of both employers and employees.

CDU state parliamentarian, Danny Eichelbaum, has called on Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) to prioritize the future of the plant in Ludwigsfelde. The first authorized representative in Ludwigsfelde, Tobias Kunzmann, stated that they do not want to accept the phase-out of production. The IG Metall union also intends to fight for the plant in Ludwigsfelde and has planned an action day for Saturday, September 13.

Despite the efforts, no solution has been found for the period after 2030 that could provide full compensation for the phasing out of production at a constant employment level. The ministry stated that for the period after 2030, there is no solution yet. The Brandenburg state government, however, continues to see future opportunities for the modern plant in Ludwigsfelde with its qualified and highly motivated workforce.

A ray of hope comes in the form of a ramp-up factory for the electric platform Van.EA, which has been established at the Ludwigsfelde plant. This could potentially pave the way for new opportunities in electromobility production after the phase-out of Sprinter models.

In the meantime, an employment security agreement has been negotiated between management and the works council until the end of December 2029. The Brandenburger state government is pushing for adequate compensation for any lost production. As the situation unfolds, the future of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Ludwigsfelde remains a topic of intense debate and concern.
