Unchecked Spread of Long Lake Wildfire Persists in Nova Scotia
The Long Lake wildfire in Nova Scotia's Annapolis County remains out of control, with an air quality warning and special statement still in effect due to the smoke. The fire, which started on August 13, has grown to an estimated 8,465 hectares in size as of Sunday.
An air quality warning and special statement have been issued in both Annapolis County and Kings County due to the wildfire smoke. Symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, or a mild cough may be experienced in Annapolis County. More serious but less common symptoms like wheezing, chest pains, or severe cough may occur. If experiencing a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.
Despite favourable weather conditions helping crews make good progress, they have not yet completed a line around the entire fire zone. As of now, 16 members from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are on site, along with 48 firefighters from Ontario, 40 firefighters from Quebec, and 59 firefighters from Nova Scotia. A total of around 200 firefighters are involved in the firefighting efforts for the Long Lake wildfire.
Earlier this week, 20 homes were destroyed and 11 outbuildings were damaged or lost in the West Dalhousie area. As of Sunday, there have been no new reports of damage. The County of Annapolis launched a navigator program on Saturday to help impacted property owners and evacuees access supports.
The woods ban, which was introduced on August 5 with a fine of $25,000 for violations, has been lifted in seven counties but remains in effect for Annapolis County. Premier Tim Houston stated that the woods ban is tough on everyone and that some parts of the province no longer have extreme conditions. DNR has issued 10 charges for woods ban violations.
The increase in the area of the wildfire is due to a more precise measurement, not due to any new spread of the fire. The woods ban was originally implemented to prevent the spread of the wildfire.
