In the heart of Scotland, the city of Inverness, nestled on the banks of Loch Ness, continues to strengthen its long-standing bond with its German partner city, Augsburg. This year marks a significant milestone in their relationship, as the Maria-Theresia Gymnasium sends its 1000th student on the traditional Scotland trip.
The jubilee was marked with a Ginkgo tree planting in the Botanic Garden of Inverness, a symbol of the enduring friendship between the two cities. Education and training have been the cornerstones of this partnership, with both cities exchanging knowledge and experiences in these areas.
In May, the Augsburg Domsingknaben visited Inverness, setting a cultural impetus that was hailed as a "highlight in the chronicle of our city partnership" by Mayor Dr. Kurt Gribl. The visit was followed by a virtual partnership exchange meeting on March 10, 2021.
Meanwhile, long-distance cyclist Bruce Morris embarked on a journey from Inverness to Augsburg, a distance of 1240 kilometers. Upon his arrival in Augsburg on July 17th at 5 pm, he brought a greeting message from Provost (Mayor) Helen Carmichael for Augsburg.
Inverness, located in northern Scotland, is a popular starting point for tours of the Scottish Highlands. Its Victorian Gothic town hall, which was the venue for the first meeting of the British government outside London in 1921, stands as a testament to its rich history.
The town hall is also likely to take one of the top spots in Christmas lighting this year. On the infrastructure front, the Torvean Gateway project, a road expansion project in the southwest of the city, is currently underway. Linked to new residential areas and a recreational area for the citizens of Inverness, the project crosses the Caledonian Canal with two bridges.
As for the current state of affairs, the 7-day incidence in the "Highlands" area is around 40. The city itself has a population of approximately 63,780.
A recent visit by goldsmith Christof Lachenmann-Fries from Augsburg added another chapter to the partnership's story. He traveled from Augsburg to the North Cape, visiting Inverness on his way back, and handed over the Augsburger Wasserring, a creation by his goldsmith Fries-Arauner.
Despite the absence of specific information about a person who taught at the Maria-Theresia-Gymnasium Augsburg in 2021 and reported on the effects of the mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II on a student group's trip to Scotland, the bond between Augsburg and Inverness remains as strong as ever. Established in 1956, this partnership continues to flourish, with both cities looking forward to many more years of mutual learning, cultural exchanges, and friendship.
