Uncovered at a Thrift Shop: The Initial Edition of Anne Frank's Secret Annex
In a remarkable turn of events, a first edition of Anne Frank's "Het Achterhuis" (the Secret Annex) was rescued from a waste paper container at a thrift shop in Bergum, Friesland. The book, which was found in less than perfect condition, lacking a dust cover like many others, was later sold on the auction site Marktplaats for €3,550.
Andries Jan Hovinga, the Omrin Estafette manager, made the decision to put the book up for sale on the platform. The starting bid was set at €250, but the final bidder remained unknown.
Despite being a first edition, the book sold for a lower price compared to the one that fetched €10,000 in a 2021 auction. It is worth noting that only 3,036 copies of "Het Achterhuis" were published in June 1947, with a second edition following in December of the same year, doubling the number of copies.
The thrift shop colleague who discovered the rare book expressed a desire to purchase it, believing a book of such historic importance should not be discarded. Hovinga, however, joked about the incident but was pleased that the book was saved from being thrown out.
The search results do not provide information on who the final bidder was, but the sale of this precious piece of literature serves as a reminder of the value of preserving our historical artefacts. The incident also underscores the importance of thrift shops in safeguarding and sharing our past.
In a world where many books may slip through the net and end up in incinerators, the story of the first edition of "Het Achterhuis" rescued from a Bergum thrift shop offers a glimmer of hope for the preservation of our literary heritage.
