Underdog triumphs at U.S. Open, defeating Zverev

In the third round of the US Open 2025, world number three Alexander Zverev suffered a disappointing loss, marking his first-round exit at the tournament since 2018. His opponent, Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded 25th, claimed victory after a gruelling three hours and 48 minutes of play.

Zverev, known as the best German tennis player, has yet to win a Grand Slam title, after 39 attempts. This loss may have dampened his aspirations, as he expressed a desire to challenge the dominance of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

The match ended with scores of 6:4, 6:7 (7:9), 4:6, 6:4, 6:4, with Auger-Aliassime converting his second match point. This was a setback for Zverev, who had won six of the previous eight matches against his Canadian opponent.

Meanwhile, Jan-Lennard Struff is the only remaining German player in the US Open singles event. He will face Novak Djokovic on Monday night, a highly anticipated match that promises to be intense. Struff has shown resilience, progressing through the rounds, while Djokovic continues his dominance in the tournament.

In another disappointing turn for German tennis, Laura Siegemund lost to Jekaterina Alexandrova with scores 0:6, 1:6. Alexandrova's victory was decisive, leaving no room for Siegemund to mount a comeback.

On the brighter side, Alex de Minaur, the eighth seed, secured a win against Daniel Altmaier, who had to retire due to sciatica issues. De Minaur's victory was not without a fight, as he won with scores 7:6 (9:7), 3:6, 4:6, 0:2. Despite the retirement, Altmaier had previously won two five-set matches before his exit.

With Zverev's loss, no German player has won a match in the US Open singles. As the tournament progresses, the focus shifts to Struff and his upcoming match against Djokovic, a battle that could potentially see a German player advance further in the tournament.
