In the picturesque city of Salzburg, Austria, a controversial construction project has caused a stir. The Swabian automotive industrialist, Wolfgang Porsche, is planning to construct a private car tunnel to his luxury estate on the Kapuzinerberg.

The estate, which was once the home of Mozart's sister Nannerl and the renowned author Stefan Zweig, is currently accessible via a narrow and impractical above-ground road. Porsche's proposed solution is an underground garage and a 500-meter private tunnel.

However, the decision regarding the construction of the tunnel is not yet final. The city council has approved the project, but the final decision on the zoning exception permit for the tunnel still needs to be confirmed by the federal state of Salzburg.

Wolfgang Porsche, a grandson of the automotive pioneer Ferdinand Porsche, serves as supervisory board chairman of Porsche Automobil Holding SE and Porsche AG, and is also a member of the supervisory boards of Volkswagen and Audi.

The Social Democratic SPÖ, the conservative ÖVP, and the right-wing FPÖ have approved the project without a separate review of the tunnel. However, the Greens and Communists opposed the resolution, arguing that the tunnel should also be reviewed.

Activists in Stuttgart have been protesting against the tunnel construction, without attracting much attention. In April, a petition with over 19,000 signatures was created, describing the construction as "special treatment for the super-rich" and a "symbol of social injustice".

Porsche has not yet made any public statements regarding the tunnel construction. Martin Zauner (FPÖ), responsible for spatial planning in the state government, has expressed a positive stance towards the underground access to the historically significant villa.

The public only recently became aware of the planned construction project. The city committee responsible for spatial planning has granted approval for the underground garage portion of the project, but the resolution for the tunnel construction still needs to be presented to the federal state of Salzburg.

As the controversy surrounding the private tunnel construction continues, it remains to be seen whether the project will proceed as planned or face further opposition.
