Underlying Marks of Hidden Acts of Violence Within School Classrooms
In HCM City, schools are grappling with a rising issue of bullying and psychological abuse, as evidenced by several recent incidents.
At Musikmittelschule Rosental, a student named N.M.A. found herself ostracized from her classmates and teachers after being punished for an excused absence. Her mother recalls that friends who were once close to her daughter began to change their attitudes, making her feel isolated. Previously, N.M.A. loved going to school, cherished her friends, and participated in activities, but now she is afraid of school, withdrawn, sleepless, and constantly feels unsafe and threatened.
Similarly, a 12th-grader named L.D.Th. in Tăng Nhơn Phú Ward is constantly teased for his weight. Remarks such as "fat boy," "pig," or "as big as a jar" are repeated daily, causing L.D.Th. to feel insecure and fearful of interacting with peers and teachers. The worst incident occurred two months later when the teacher publicly suggested expelling the student and shouted that she would fight to the end if anyone complained.
Teachers must take the lead in promoting respect for differences and integrating lessons into various subjects. Nguyễn Thị Hông, a teacher at Phước Long High School, commented that body-shaming remains widespread. She emphasized the need for schools to create an environment where students feel safe and protected when they speak up.
Unfortunately, some students echo the teacher's words, making the victim feel completely cornered. In Literature class, the student was repeatedly ignored when she volunteered to answer questions, and was given zero marks when she was finally called on. Remarks can inflict deep wounds on children's souls, leading some pupils to wear masks all day to hide and withdraw.
The student's health suffered, and she experienced stomach pain, for which the teacher followed her to the infirmary and scolded the class monitor. The student has asked her mother why she deserves such cruel words, as she has not harmed anyone. Psychologist Dr Phạm Thị Thúy stated that the number of cases seeking counselling for psychological crises is rising, with some falling into severe depression.
The mother hopes that the school and city's education authorities will step in, listen to students and parents, and ensure a happy and safe learning environment for her child and others. Schools must address these issues head-on to prevent further harm and create a positive, supportive atmosphere for all students.
