Understanding Alaska Airlines Seat Classes: Essential Information Explained

Alaska Airlines' frequent flyer programme offers a variety of benefits to its members, depending on the cabin-purchased fare class. Here's a breakdown of the earning rates for each fare class:

In the economy class, also known as the Main Cabin, there are more than a dozen different fare classes: Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N, Q, O, G, and X. The base points earned for each of these classes range from 100% (for M, L, V, S, N, Q, O, or G) to 125% (for H or K) and 150% (for Y or B). However, these classes do not offer bonus points or any elite-qualifying points.

The Premium Class, a subsection of the Main Cabin, offers extra legroom, early boarding, and complimentary drinks. The only fare class for this premium offering is R, which earns 110% base points, 10% bonus points, and elite-qualifying points.

Moving up to first class, there are four fare classes: J, C, D, and I. The base points for each of these classes vary significantly. For instance, First class - J earns 200% base points, while First class - C earns 175% base points. The bonus points and elite-qualifying points for these classes are not specified in the chart.

Elite status with Alaska Airlines does not affect the amount of elite-qualifying points earned for a flight. However, it does impact the bonus points earned on base points. For example, Gold members earn a 50% bonus on base points, Silver members earn a 25% bonus, Platinum members earn a 100% bonus, and Titanium members earn a 150% bonus.

Upgrade eligibility is another perk of Alaska's Elite status. Silver members can have immediate upgrades at the time of booking (based on availability) for certain fare classes. For MVP status, upgrades apply to fare classes Y, B, M; for MVP Gold, fare classes Y, B, M, H; for MVP Gold 75K, fare classes Y, B, M, H, Q; and for MVP Gold 75K 100K Challenge, all fare classes are eligible for upgrades.

It's important to note that the fare class booked affects the total points and elite-qualifying points earned for Alaska flights. Premium Class fares (R class) offer different earning rates compared to regular Main Cabin fares. Additionally, Elite status bonuses apply only to base points, not elite-qualifying points (status points).

To search for specific fare classes that would entitle you to an upgrade, you can select the upgrade type under "Book a flight" and click "Find Flights". To find your Alaska fare class, you can check the booking portal before booking a ticket. However, Alaska Airlines does not currently allow searching flights by a specific fare class.

By selecting "First Upgrade", you may be prompted to purchase a "K" class ticket, which can get you a first class upgrade at booking on select fares when available (for Silver members). This feature is also available for Platinum and Titanium members, but with earlier upgrade windows: 120 hours before departure for Platinum members and 120 hours before departure for certain fare classes for Titanium members.

In summary, Alaska Airlines' frequent flyer programme offers a diverse range of earning rates and benefits depending on the cabin-purchased fare class. By understanding these rates and the perks associated with each class, travellers can make informed decisions when booking their flights to maximise their rewards.
