Underway is the massive £1 Billion copper pit development at Centinela's Encuentro Sulphuros

Minera Centinela, a leading Chilean copper mining company, has embarked on a significant expansion project called Encuentro Sulfuros. This development, located 2,300 meters above sea level and approximately 30 kilometers from Sierra Gorda, marks a significant step forward in Centinela's competitive position in global copper markets.

The project, valued at over $1 billion, is a strategic investment specifically for pit development, complementing a broader $4.4 billion expansion initiative. The Encuentro Sulfuros development provides access to substantial new mineral reserves, extending the mine's operational life.

The focus of the Encuentro Sulfuros project is on sustainability, with optimized resource utilization and advanced operational efficiency measures. Critical support infrastructure, such as a new truck maintenance facility, a dedicated powder magazine, and a specialized oil station, are being constructed as part of the project.

The pre-stripping phase of the project involves moving an extraordinary 186 million metric tons of material over a concentrated 19-month timeline. The operation is set to establish January 2026 as the target date for complete autonomous operation, with the official start date being July 1, 2025.

When fully operational, Centinela will process approximately 200,000 metric tons of ore daily, boosting total average copper production beyond 300,000 metric tons annually. The operation will utilize 53 autonomous pieces of equipment, making it one of the more comprehensive autonomous mining implementations in the industry.

The gradual transition from contractor operations to autonomous systems allows for technological validation and workforce adaptation. The project's long-term planning approach demonstrates responsible resource development that balances current production needs with future opportunities.

The new mining operation, once operational, will become the primary mineral source for Centinela's second concentrator plant under construction. The Encuentro Sulfuros pit kicked off with a first blast removing over 450,000 metric tons of material, marking the beginning of this ambitious project.
