Unfavourable weather conditions disrupt learning for students in Lapu region
Student Struggles Amidst School Disruptions in Lapu-Lapu City
In the heart of Lapu-Lapu City, a student named Jaikah Mae Divino from the Advance Institute of Technology Inc. (AIT) is facing challenges due to the regular class suspensions caused by the Southwest Monsoon and recent tropical systems.
Jaikah Mae, a diligent student, finds it hard to absorb lessons when classes are suspended. The unpredictable weather patterns disrupt her learning rhythm, causing delays in her academic progress.
Commuting to school during heavy downpours is another hurdle for Jaikah Mae. Flooding along the way makes her journey to AIT challenging and time-consuming.
The city administration of Lapu-Lapu City has been proactive in addressing this issue. Recently, they undertook the repair and rehabilitation of drainage systems along Sangi New Road in Pajo to improve water flow and prevent flooding. The Lapu-Lapu City Government and Congressman Junard "Ahong" Chan also conducted an inspection of the drainage system along this road.
However, Jaikah Mae believes that announcements about school suspensions are sometimes too late, making it difficult for students like her to plan their commute or find alternative means of learning.
Kristina Chloe Dumali, a Grade 7 student at AIT, shares a similar sentiment. She missed some face-to-face classes due to flooding. Dumali suggests that the school should improve its communication systems to ensure updates reach students quickly.
In addition, students living in flood-prone areas and those attending schools vulnerable to flash floods are particularly affected. The school provides education through modular and online classes, but students with weak internet connections or signal struggle to keep up with schoolwork.
Dumali also expresses the need for the city government to invest in drainage projects to prevent flooding incidents. She believes that with improved infrastructure, students like Jaikah Mae and herself would find it easier to attend school and focus on their studies.
During heavy rains, drivers prioritize safety, making it hard for students like Jaikah Mae to find transport. This adds to the difficulties faced by students who rely on public transportation to get to school.
Earlier announcements about school suspensions would help students avoid the worst effects of heavy flooding and rain. With timely information, students can plan their commute or find alternative means of learning, ensuring minimal disruption to their education.
In the face of these challenges, Jaikah Mae and Kristina remain hopeful. They look forward to a future where their education is not interrupted by the unpredictable weather patterns of the Philippines.
