"unique 'One and Only Day' series features an extraordinary 35-year-long friendship"
In the heart of Tottori Prefecture, Japan, a unique bond has formed between a salesman named Mr. Yamashita and one of his long-time customers. Mr. Yamashita, who has sold over 3,000 vehicles at Netz Toyota Kurayoshi in Kurayoshi City, is known for his people-centric approach to sales.
The unusual friendship began 35 years ago when the customer, who often traveled with his wife in a Toyota Regius Ace, shared some words that would forever change Mr. Yamashita's life. The customer emphasised the importance of appreciating a life with sufficient food, shelter, and clothing, and being considerate and mindful of others. Initially, Mr. Yamashita dismissed these words but came to appreciate them as he gained more experience.
The bond deepened when the customer's wife was hospitalised, and Mr. Yamashita visited them without hesitation. The customer was surprised but happy to see him during this difficult time, and their bond deepened beyond a typical customer-salesman relationship.
Years later, when the customer came to trade in his large car for a compact vehicle, Mr. Yamashita suggested he keep the car filled with memories with his wife for a little longer. The customer seemed somewhat lonely without her presence during the visit, and his expression changed to a more cheerful one after Yamashita's suggestion.
Throughout their relationship, the customer and his wife would often bring souvenirs for Mr. Yamashita after their trips, and he believes that he has received many gifts from them, not the other way around.
In 2016, Tottori Prefecture was struck by a magnitude six earthquake. Mr. Yamashita called the customer to check on his status after confirming his family was safe. This act of concern reinforced the deep bond between the two.
Mr. Yamashita prioritizes his relationships with customers, seeing the sales department work as focused on people rather than things. He believes in speaking directly with customers when receiving complaints to hear the details of the situation. Toyota, the company he represents, shares this philosophy, believing in putting oneself in someone else's shoes and thinking about what action they can take for the customer in front of them.
Sadly, the customer's wife passed away about one year ago, but their bond continues to be a source of inspiration for Mr. Yamashita. He continues to work diligently, striving to form human relationships that go beyond the sale of a vehicle.
