United Kingdom and Morocco - Collaborative Relationship

In the heart of North Africa, Morocco and the United Kingdom share a relationship that dates back nearly a millennium. Both countries, renowned for their rich history and culture, are maritime trading nations whose prosperity and influence are founded on the development of their domestic economies as regional hubs.

Recently, the United Kingdom has taken over the Presidency of the G8 group of Developed Countries, using this position to support the private sector across North Africa and the Middle East. This move is a testament to the growing importance of these regions in the global economy.

Morocco, one of only a handful of key markets selected to have a personal UK Trade Envoy, has been fortunate to welcome Sir Vincent Fean, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience and prior service in high-profile roles, including as Private Secretary to Prince Charles. Sir Vincent was appointed British Ambassador to Morocco in 2013 and has since supported projects enhancing UK-Morocco trade relations, cultural exchange, and cooperation on counter-terrorism and regional stability.

The Moroccan Government organised the Conference of the Friends of the Syrian People in Marrakech in December, which led to the recognition of the Syrian opposition. This event underscored Morocco's influential role in regional affairs.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, the British Embassy is funding ten projects in Morocco in 2013 to help with democratic debate, training journalists, strengthening democratic participation, increasing public transparency, and supporting the fight against corruption.

The British Ambassador views Morocco as a beautiful country rich in history and culture, with forms found in Westminster Abbey originating from Morocco. He anticipates a busy tenure in Morocco, focusing on new ways for Britain and Morocco to cooperate for mutual benefit.

Recognising the significance of English language proficiency, the British Ambassador is working closely with Britain to deliver high-quality English Language Training in Morocco. He believes collaboration with organisations like the British Council can result in remarkable results in expanding English language proficiency in Morocco. The goal is to significantly increase the number of Moroccans who can communicate in English by the end of the ambassador's mandate.

The United Kingdom is a vocal advocate of free trade and open markets, looking forward to the launch of negotiations for a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Morocco. This agreement is expected to further strengthen the economic ties between the two nations.

Both countries are Monarchies and have warm friendships between their Royal Families. The Moroccan Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Lalla Joumala, provides valuable advice and tireless work for Britain.

London Heathrow Airport and Casablanca Airport are the busiest and most connected airports in their respective regions, facilitating travel and trade between the two nations.

A partnership was signed last October between Casablanca Finance City and City UK, further deepening the financial ties between the two nations. The initiatives under the G8 Presidency, such as a priority focus on investment, practical support for small businesses, and encouraging women's economic participation, are expected to contribute to the continued growth of this partnership.

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has appointed a senior British business leader, Lord Sharman, as Trade Envoy for Morocco. This appointment underscores the importance of the UK-Morocco relationship and the potential for increased trade and investment between the two nations.
