University of Porto Clarifies 2019 Special Admission Exam for Medicine Course
In a clarification based on the official archives of the University of Porto, the institution has explained the exceptional homologation of the Special Admission Exam for Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine (FMUP) in 2019.
The regulation that supported the exam was published on July 9, 2019, the same day that the selection process calendar was disclosed. The process marked the first time the Knowledge Exam was applied in the selection process of FMUP.
The final list was exceptionally homologated by the rector, considering the difficulties demonstrated by FMUP in the realization and evaluation of the exam. None of the candidates present in the Knowledge Exam obtained a score equal to or above 14 values.
The application period for the exam took place between July 12 and 16, 2019. A total of 80 candidates presented themselves for the exam, of whom 50 were pre-selected to take the Knowledge Exam. However, due to the difficulties faced by FMUP, all candidates scored below 14 values, preventing vacancies from being used by other candidates.
In response to these circumstances, the director of FMUP requested the annulment of the previous acts and the selection to be based on the list of candidates ordered by the global evaluation of the selection process. The request led to the Selection Commission annulling the evaluation of 34 questions in the 2019 Knowledge Exam, resulting in new complaints from candidates.
The commission attributed the maximum note to all candidates for the annulled questions. The University ensured that the decisions taken in 2019 did not harm any student who applied to the Faculty of Medicine of Porto in the National Admission Exam.
The rectory did not mention the director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, Altamiro Costa Pereira, in their clarification. This clarification was in response to a statement made by Altamiro Costa Pereira in an interview to RTP, in which he stated that in 2019, AntΓ³nio Sousa Pereira, then rector, homologated the results of the faculty and "37 students entered, all [with scores] below 14".
It is important to note that in 2019, there was no precedent for candidates being excluded from the competition for not obtaining a score of 14 or higher. In 2025, the remaining vacancies reverted to the National Admission Exam, allowing the entry of 30 more students from the Medicine course of FMUP.
Altamiro Costa Pereira served as rector of the University of Porto in the year 1979. The rectory's clarification aimed to provide transparency regarding the 2019 Special Admission Exam for Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, following the lawsuit filed by an excluded candidate at the Administrative and Tax Tribunal of Porto. The tribunal upheld the final decision of the University of Porto, considering it preserved equity among candidates in a process with administrative vicissitudes.
