University City of Marburg under Alert in September 2025

In the heart of Germany, the University City of Marburg is gearing up for a week of significant events, each carrying its own unique message and importance.

The week kicks off on September 1 with the hoisting of the municipal flag on the town hall for World Peace Day, also known as "Anti-War Day". This day serves as a memorial to the horrors of World War I, originally observed on August 1, but later moved to September 1.

On September 20, the focus shifts towards children's rights and democracy. A monument for democracy will be rebuilt in Berlin, based on ideas submitted by children and young people. This reconstruction is the collective effort of various groups, including youth organizations like Kreisjugendring, Bezirksjugendring, and partners such as รœberMorgen e.V., Youth Red Cross, and other local social initiatives. The UNICEF Germany and the German Children's Aid Organization are also involved, organizing a nationwide participation action for World Children's Day. The theme for this day in Marburg is "Children's Rights - Building Blocks for Democracy!".

The following day, September 21, is a day of remembrance. All public buildings in Marburg will be flagged in memory of the victims of flight, expulsion, and deportation. This day is also the Day of the Homeland, first celebrated on August 6, 1950, but moved to September 21 in 1999.

The week concludes on September 23 with a flagging for World Bisexuality Day, or "Celebrate Bisexuality Day". The town hall will be flagged from 7 am until sunset to mark this day, which has been observed since 1999 to highlight bisexuality as an independent sexual orientation.
