Unlawful Actions Unfolds: A Closer Look at Recent Court Proceedings

Four Social Casinos Exit California Amidst Nationwide Regulatory Crackdown

In a significant shake-up for the online gaming industry, four popular social casinos have announced their departure from California, following a wave of regulatory changes across multiple states.

The affected casinos, including Chumba Casino (operated by Virtual Gaming Worlds), LuckyLand Slots, Zula Casino, and MyPrize.us, have been forced to pull out of California, New Jersey, Arizona, and several other states, due to new legislation that reclassifies sweepstakes gaming as illegal gambling.

For instance, New Jersey's Assembly Bill 5447, enacted on August 14, 2025, bans sweepstakes-style casinos that operate using simulated currencies redeemable for real-world prizes. This law has prompted operators like VGW, Zula Casino, and others to withdraw their sweepstakes coin games from the state.

Similar legislative actions are underway in Connecticut, Montana, and Delaware, which are either passing or considering laws to close legal loopholes exploited by these platforms. These restrictive laws aim to regulate or prohibit sweepstakes casinos to protect consumers and ensure that gambling laws are uniformly enforced.

In response, these social casinos are either shutting down entirely or limiting their services in these states, often continuing only free-play modes that avoid the elements defining gambling under the new laws.

Meanwhile, the CEO of BetMGM, a leading figure in the online gaming industry, has publicly stated his belief that sweepstakes casinos are illegal.

Elsewhere, an Illinois resident is exploring the possibility of filing a class-action lawsuit against the parent company of WOW Vegas, another social casino that has been affected by these changes.

As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the social casino industry will adapt and respond to these challenges. Stay tuned for further updates.
