Violent Clashes at Anti-War March in Cologne

Violent clashes erupted between police and protesters during an anti-war march in Cologne on Sunday evening. The rally, organized by the "Disarm Rheinmetall" alliance, attracted around 3,000 people who gathered to protest against armament and war.

The peaceful demonstration took a turn for the worse as some participants became aggressive, leading to the halting of the rally. The police reported repeated violations of assembly laws and attacks on officers, which ultimately resulted in the detainment of a group of protesters late into the night.

According to a police spokesperson, 13 officers were injured during the clashes, with four needing to end their shift. Two individuals were temporarily detained for not complying with dispersal orders. Medical help was provided where it was needed, and 18 of the injured were hospitalized.

The "Disarm Rheinmetall" alliance alleged that police used targeted strikes on hands and stomachs, as well as pepper spray. A police spokesperson, however, reported finding pyrotechnics, burn spirits, and gas cylinders in an accompanying vehicle.

A criminal investigation was initiated against one of the temporarily detained individuals for resisting and causing bodily harm to police officers. No initial insights on possible complaints against officers were available.

During the clashes, there were two medical emergencies which were treated by emergency services and taken to a hospital. In total, 147 people were injured and treated by medics. Twelve participants came forward claiming injuries to the police on Sunday.

The operation to contain the detained protesters ended around 5 a.m. The search results do not provide information about the spokesperson of the "Disarm Rheinmetall" alliance or the statement released on Sunday evening. Some participants were masked and lit smoke bombs during the demonstration.

The city of Cologne is now left to pick up the pieces following this violent outburst, with many questioning the need for such aggression during a peaceful protest. The investigation into the incidents continues, with both the police and the protesters under scrutiny.
