In the bustling cities of South India, such as Bangalore and Chennai, there has been a particularly rapid growth in the adoption of electric kick scooters in recent years. This shift towards electric mobility is not limited to these urban hubs, as smaller cities and industrial towns like Aurangabad, Nashik, Sikar, and Ajmer are also experiencing rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption.

The electric scooter landscape has transformed dramatically over the past two decades, with numerous categories now available. These include performance scooters, family-oriented models, premium performance options, maxi scooters, lifestyle vehicles, and specialised offerings for women and delivery workers. The market response to these electric scooters has been enthusiastic, with mainstream consumers, not just early adopters, recognizing the economic benefits of these environmentally friendly vehicles.

One company at the forefront of this electric revolution is Ather Energy. The company's CEO, Tarun Mehta, has revealed that Ather Energy wants to focus on creating a "rich bouquet" of electric scooters. This upcoming range of Ather's electric scooters will be more cost-effective and versatile than the current crop. The company is planning to develop a comprehensive portfolio of electric scooters, with scooters based on the upcoming EL platform set to be launched in the immediate future.

Ather Energy is not stopping at scooters, as the company is also working on an electric motorcycle range. The company has managed to reduce production costs by approximately 24% over the past three years. This cost reduction was achieved through comprehensive supply chain optimization across materials, processes, treatment, and logistics. This potential cost reduction potentially positions Ather Energy as one of the most competitive cost structures in the global electric vehicle industry.

Interestingly, electric penetration in smaller cities is higher than in metropolitan areas. The 300 smallest cities show the highest electric penetration at 22-23%. Nationwide, electric scooters have achieved nearly 18% penetration, with the southern regions showing a 20% penetration rate. It's too early to predict which motorcycle segments will transition to electric first, but entry and mid-level motorcycles appear promising candidates.

As the electric scooter market evolves into multiple specialized segments, companies like Ather Energy are leading the charge in providing affordable, versatile, and high-quality electric vehicles. With their focus on creating a "rich bouquet" of electric scooters and motorcycles, Ather Energy is poised to continue shaping the future of electric mobility in India.
