Bicester Town Centre Redevelopment: Atkins Tapped for Market Square Revitalization

Cherwell District Council has appointed consulting firm Atkins to develop new plans for the revitalization of Bicester Market Square. The aim is to encourage residents and visitors to enjoy Bicester town centre and support local businesses, ultimately boosting the local economy.

The project, benefiting from £4.25m of Cherwell District Council's capital budget and additional funds from a government grant for infrastructure in Bicester, is expected to make a real difference to the town's look, feel, and success.

Councillor Donna Ford, the district council's Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, expressed her excitement about the project, stating that the aim is to create a public space in Bicester town centre that will become a focal point. The new regeneration project may help improve the appearance of the town centre and act as a magnet for more residents and visitors.

The consultants will work closely with local Bicester businesses and residents to agree on the best approach for transforming the area. The long-term project includes creating a new traffic scheme and public space, with the primary focus on creating a high-quality public space filled with numerous uses and attractions.

The new public space is expected to be visually appealing and packed with cultural experiences and events. The project could potentially be beneficial for businesses in Bicester, as smaller shopping and seaside towns have reported a significant loss in sales due to the cost-of-living.

Councillor Donna Ford also emphasized that these are exciting times for Bicester and Cherwell as they look to invest significantly in the regeneration project. As the project progresses, more details about its potential impact on the cost-of-living and the appearance of the town centre are expected to be shared.
