Unveiling of the new statue of Blessed Carlo Acutis prior to his canonization in Assisi
In a significant event held on August 15, 2021, outside the Shrine of the Renunciation at the Church of St. Mary Major in Assisi, a new statue of Blessed Carlo Acutis was unveiled. This statue, titled "St. Carlo at the Cross," was created by renowned sculptor Timothy Schmalz, who is also known for several works displayed outside St. Peter's Square, including "Angels Unawares."
The statue is an impressive 11 feet tall and depicts Blessed Carlo Acutis kneeling beside Christ crucified with a laptop in his hand. The contemporary elements in the statue, such as jeans, a sweatshirt, and a backpack, serve to emphasize Blessed Carlo Acutis' relevance to young people.
The laptop in the statue displays a chalice and paten, symbolizing Blessed Acutis' deep devotion to the Eucharist. The sling hanging from the side of the teen's backpack, a reference to David and Goliath, signifies the use of modern technology to combat the trivialization of spirituality and Christianity.
Schmalz believes that Blessed Carlo Acutis is a contemporary saint who serves as a role model for young people. He explained that Blessed Acutis' head leans gently on the cross, his hand is wrapped around it, and he almost merges as a part of the cross, symbolizing his humility and devotion.
The statue's design also incorporates elements inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, where it will be located. Blessed Acutis is depicted kneeling at the foot of the cross, similar to traditional representations of St. Francis. The sculptor emphasized the emotional connection between Blessed Acutis and St. Francis, stating that he believes the teen would appreciate the elements included in the sculpture.
The statue's location in Assisi and its connection to St. Francis of Assisi were factors in its design. The statue was eventually shipped to its permanent home in Assisi, where it was officially unveiled on October 10, 2021.
Before his death at age 15, Blessed Acutis created an online database of eucharistic miracles around the world. His legacy lives on, not only in the digital realm but also in the form of this striking statue that stands as a testament to his faith and devotion.
On September 7, Blessed Carlo Acutis will be canonized by Pope Leo XIV, further cementing his place in the annals of the Catholic Church. The Church, according to Schmalz, is for the youth, and it's a growing church, a sentiment echoed in the installation of this statue in Assisi.
Timothy Schmalz's statue of Blessed Carlo Acutis serves as a powerful symbol of faith, devotion, and the relevance of spirituality in the modern world. It is a beacon of inspiration for young people, reminding them of the impact they can have in spreading the teachings of Christ.
