Upcoming Wildcard in MotoGP: Honda places bet on Aleix Espargaro for hometown race in Barcelona
Honda Welcomes Aleix Espargaro as Wildcard Entry for Barcelona MotoGP
Aleix Espargaro, the Spanish MotoGP rider, is set to return to the track this weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, his home race, following a successful short rehab after an injury sustained from a cycling accident.
Espargaro, who hails from Granollers near the circuit, will participate in his fourth race of the season in Barcelona, despite missing the Hungarian Grand Prix due to his injury. Unfortunately, the accident also forced him to cancel his planned substitute start in Hungary.
Honda announced the wildcard entry on their social media channels on Wednesday, with expectations for Espargaro being lower due to his recent injury. It's worth noting that Espargaro has not scored any points yet this season.
In the absence of any new MotoGP rider contracts since Espargaró's withdrawal, Honda's grid for the Barcelona race will consist of five RC213Vs. Luca Marini and Johann Zarco have secured contract extensions, but there have been no announcements of replacements for Espargaró or Somkiat Chantra, a rider from LCR who remains sidelined.
Somkiat Chantra, however, will attempt his comeback after a long injury break this weekend in Barcelona. Interestingly, this race is not a substitute ride for Chantra.
Espargaro has had a successful outing at the Barcelona race in the past, having won his home race in 2023. He also has wildcard entries in Jerez, Silverstone, and Assen, where he stood in for Luca Marini.
This weekend's race in Barcelona will not be a substitute ride for Chantra, but it will mark Espargaro's continued determination to overcome his injuries and compete in the sport he loves.
