Urgent Action Required for Child Benefit Recipients: Over a Million Parents Must Act Immediately

In Germany, parents or legal guardians can apply for child benefit (Kindergeld) for their children, regardless of their age. Here's what you need to know about the application process, eligibility, and conditions.

Starting from the 18th birthday, if you wish the child benefit to begin in 2025, you should submit an application to the responsible family benefits office (Familienkasse), which is typically part of the employment agency. The application can be made in writing, online, or a combination of both. However, if you start the application online, you'll need to print the form, sign it, and send it by mail. Since January 2018, claims can only be made retroactively for up to six months.

The exact deadline for submitting the application depends on when the benefit is intended to start, but it must be done no later than six months after eligibility begins. Failure to apply on time can result in a loss of money for up to six months from the date of application.

The claim generally applies until the age of 25, but is shortened if the offspring is registered as unemployed, with the payment stopping at 21. If you wish to receive child benefit beyond the age of 18, the conditions include studying, training, internship, or voluntary service.

Important documents for the child benefit application include training certificates, study certificates, and proof of internship. It's essential to familiarise yourself with the required documents and evidence from the responsible authority to avoid delays in processing. Incomplete applications can lead to processing delays.

In 2023, €54 billion in child benefit was paid out, highlighting its significance in supporting families in Germany.

For more detailed information, we recommend contacting the responsible family benefits office (Familienkasse) or visiting their website.
