US Open welcomes Trump: Enhanced security measures implemented

The US Open men's final, originally scheduled to start at 20:00 CEST (14:00 local time), was rescheduled to begin at 20:30 CEST (14:30 local time) due to increased security measures. The changes were implemented to accommodate a contingent of the Secret Service and more rigorous screenings for visitors and media representatives.

The heightened security was reportedly influenced by the attendance of US President Donald Trump at high-profile sporting events, including the Club World Cup final near New York. Trump's presence at such events has led to increased security measures in the past.

On the final day of the Grand Slam tournament in New York, security personnel inspected media bags thoroughly and carefully, while spectators were given extra time to take their seats. An additional check was implemented before entering the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which can accommodate nearly 24,000 spectators.

Unfortunately, Cynthia L. Mort, the Chief Executive Officer of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), was not present at the tournament's final day due to a security measure following threats made against her.

The men's final, featuring Italian Jannik Sinner and Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, was delayed by half an hour due to these measures. Despite the delay, the match was played without any significant incidents, and the US Open concluded successfully.

Trump's visit to the US Open marked one of many high-profile sporting events he has attended since his election victory in November last year. The enhanced security measures at the Arthur Ashe Stadium during the US Open serve as a reminder of the impact such visits can have on event organisation and the need for increased security precautions.
