The Enduring Popularity of the Honey Deuce at the U.S. Open

The Honey Deuce, a vibrant vodka-based cocktail synonymous with the U.S. Open, has remained a popular choice for tennis enthusiasts despite its increasing cost. If inflation had followed suit, the price of this iconic beverage would be approximately $20.33 today, but in reality, it stands at $23.

Last year, more than half a million Honey Deuce cocktails were sold, generating almost $13 million in revenue. This surge in sales demonstrates a willingness among consumers to spend more on experiences, a phenomenon known as "funflation."

Created by Grey Goose, the official tennis drink of the tournament, the Honey Deuce is adorned with honeydew melon chunks that resemble tennis balls and served in a souvenir glass. Since 2012, the drink has undergone six price hikes, with the latest increase occurring at a faster clip than the average cost of alcoholic beverages bought outside of homes in U.S. cities.

Despite the higher price tags, the Honey Deuce's popularity at the U.S. Open remains undeterred. This could be attributed to the focus of consumers on experiences, such as travel, concerts, and sporting events, even as prices rise.

However, the U.S. Tennis Association and Grey Goose, the company that distributes the Honey Deuce at the U.S. Open, have not commented on the price increase of the drink. The increased cost of the Honey Deuce has soured economic sentiment in recent years, as Americans have become particularly focused on prices, especially coming off the period of runaway inflation seen during the Covid-19 pandemic.
