In the digital landscape, a new competitor to Twitter has emerged, and it's making waves. Threads, a platform launched by Meta in 2023, has been gaining traction, attracting some of the world's most influential figures.
As of Q1 2024, Threads boasts 85 million monthly active users, a significant figure compared to Twitter's 349 million. However, the gap is closing, as recent company announcements reveal Threads now has 130 million monthly active users, compared to Twitter's 550 million.
The app's popularity is evident in its user base. Selena Gomez, with 13.6 million followers, holds the second-most followed account on Threads. She is closely followed by Kylie Jenner (11.9 million), Kim Kardashian (10.5 million), and Jennifer Lopez (8.6 million). Other notable figures include Chris Hemsworth (6.6 million), Will Smith (7.3 million), Shakira (7.8 million), Miley Cyrus (6.8 million), and Katy Perry (5.8 million). The seventh most followed account belongs to MrBeast, with 7.7 million followers.
Threads' growth is also evident in its download numbers. In March 2024, the app was downloaded 27.98 million times worldwide, following a strong start in July 2023, where it saw 73.14 million downloads. To date, Threads App has generated a total of 265.44 million downloads across Google Play and App Store.
In the US, Threads has 1.6 million daily active users, a figure that pales in comparison to Twitter's 27 million. Yet, the app's rapid growth suggests that it could soon challenge Twitter's dominance in the social media sphere.
As the race for social media supremacy continues, Threads, with its high-profile user base and impressive growth, is certainly a platform to watch.
