Vatican Appoints Judges for Canonical Trial of Priest Marko Rupnik

The Vatican City has appointed judges for the upcoming canonical trial of Slovenian priest Father Marko Rupnik. Rupnik faces serious allegations of sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuse against more than two dozen women. This follows a series of events, including his dismissal from the Jesuits and the removal of his artwork from Vatican News.

Rupnik's past is marked by controversy. In 2020, he was briefly excommunicated by the Vatican for absolving an Italian novice with whom he had sex. Despite this, the Diocese of Koper incardinated him, taking him under their jurisdiction. The Jesuits later expelled him in 2023 for refusing to obey restrictions related to the abuse allegations.

The upcoming trial is a result of the Vatican lifting the statute of limitations to allow the process to proceed. The panel of judges is independent and external to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The trial could start soon, with victims participating as injured parties, aiming for defense and transparency. A lawyer for the victims has expressed hope for justice and amends.

The canonical trial of Father Marko Rupnik marks a significant step in addressing the serious allegations against him. The independent panel of judges and the involvement of victims as injured parties signal a commitment to a fair and transparent process.
