Vatican Holds Third "Gathering of Fraternal Unity"
In mid-September, Rome will play host to a significant cultural event, the "World Meeting on Human Fraternity." This gathering, inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical "Fratelli tutti" and the declaration on the universal fraternity of all humans, aims to shape the current epochal change with respect for differences, harmony with creation, and the preservation of the dignity and freedom of every human being.
Journalist Maria Ressa, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for her efforts in press freedom, will be among the prominent figures participating in the event. Ressa emphasizes the importance of human fraternity, stating that we are more connected than ever, yet more isolated, and that choosing connection over division and shared responsibility over indifference is essential for our survival.
The event will kick off on September 12 with Pope Leo XIV receiving the participants. Nobel laureates and other prominent figures will lead the solemn session. Alongside Ressa, notable participants include Cardinal Kurt Koch, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, who played a significant role in symposium events.
On September 12, working groups will meet in various locations in Rome to discuss politics, economics, AI, and other topics. These discussions have already produced concrete results, according to Francesco Occhetta, general secretary of the "Fratelli-tutti" foundation.
A cultural highlight of the event will be the concert on St. Peter's Square on September 13, featuring Andrea Bocelli, Pharrell Williams, and John Legend. Participants will also have the opportunity to pass through the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica on Saturday afternoon.
The solemn session on September 13 aims to present a manifesto, potentially a Ten Commandments of Humanity, capturing what allows us to recognize ourselves as brothers and reject inhumanity in our culture. The results of these meetings will be presented during this session on the Roman Capitol.
Italian Cardinal Mauro Gambetti stated that the principle of universal fraternity can provide the coordinates for the current epochal change. The intention of the event is not just about fine words and a photo op with the Pope, but about setting a moral claim for themselves in front of the whole world and then committing to fulfilling it in the different parts of the world.
The closing event on Saturday evening in front of the Vatican Basilica is intended to ensure that the event does not remain at abstract concepts, but that people celebrate together. The "World Meeting on Human Fraternity" in Rome promises to be a significant gathering, fostering dialogue, unity, and a commitment to a more fraternal world.
