Mitch Marner Makes a Change for Family's Safety

After nine seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Mitch Marner has decided to embark on a new chapter with the Vegas Golden Knights. The decision, reported by TSN's Mark Masters and Editor in Leaf, was primarily driven by concerns for Marner's family's safety.

Marner, who chose to play in a market with less pressure, expressed that when his family's safety comes into question, especially with a new son, he doesn't think it's acceptable. The playoffs last spring saw a significant escalation that directly affected Marner's family, leading to the need for a change.

Following the Leafs' playoff elimination, Marner hired full-time security at his house for two weeks. The extra protection was necessary due to concerns about potential visitors with harmful intentions. Simple tasks like walking his dog or child became a concern for Marner in this situation.

The situation worsened when Marner's father-in-law called to warn him that his address had been posted online. This online posting, by someone with harmful intentions, added to the stress and worry Marner and his family felt.

Despite his love for representing Toronto, certain off-ice experiences made it clear that it was time for a change. The Maple Leafs had hoped to sign Marner to an extension after his first 100-point season, but the decision was not solely based on hockey considerations.

Marner's departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs was described as a "bittersweet moment." The Vegas Golden Knights acquired him in a sign-and-trade deal at the start of free agency. Mitch Marner's decision to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs was a difficult one, but he felt it was necessary to provide a safer environment for his family.
