Venerated sportscaster Bob Uecker receives heartfelt salute from the brewing fraternity in a star-filled pregame event
Bob Uecker Honoured in Star-Studded Ceremony at American Family Field
Bob Uecker, the beloved broadcaster and actor, was honoured in a special ceremony at American Family Field, the home of the Milwaukee Brewers. The event, which took place during a game against the New York Mets, was a celebration of Uecker's life and career, attracting a host of his colleagues and admirers.
Uecker, who passed away on January 16 at the age of 90, was nationally recognised for his appearances on talk shows, the "Major League" movies, Miller Lite commercials, and the television show "Mr. Belvedere". His friendly demeanour and approachable nature made him a favourite among players and fans alike.
The ceremony was attended by several of Uecker's colleagues from both "Mr. Belvedere" and "Major League", as well as former NBC broadcast partner Bob Costas, Hall of Famers George Brett, Ted Simmons, and Robin Yount, and Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich.
The game featured commemorative baseballs and bases honouring Uecker, and all Brewers players wore special tribute uniforms with "UECK" instead of their own names on the back for Sunday's game. Memorabilia including photos and various examples of Uecker's plaid sports coats were displayed all over the concourses.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the renaming of American Family Field's broadcast wing above the press box to the Bob Uecker Broadcast Center. This renaming was a fitting tribute to Uecker's broadcasting career, which began after he was initially hired as a scout by the Milwaukee Brewers.
Uecker's baseball knowledge was highly appreciated, especially by Ted Simmons, and he was known to offer pointers to the catcher on handling the Brewers' pitching staff. His broadcasting skills were also underrated, according to Bob Costas and Bud Selig.
Former President Richard Nixon requested to meet Uecker during a game, and Uecker spoke warmly about the experience. His final sign-off after the Brewers' NL Wild Card Series loss to the New York Mets was poignant, according to Bob Costas.
John Colson, a partial season ticket holder from Milwaukee, waited over 3 1/2 hours before the game to honour Uecker. Fans also showed their appreciation for Uecker by wearing T-shirts with the message "Juuuust a bit outside", a reference to his famous line from the movie "Major League".
As the Brewers currently own the best record in baseball and chase their first World Series title, the ceremony was a fitting tribute to a man who was beloved by players, fans, and colleagues alike. Uecker will be missed, but his legacy will live on at American Family Field.
