Dutch Grand Prix: First Free Practice Report

The first free practice session for the Dutch Grand Prix saw a mix of incidents and strong performances, with Lando Norris setting the fastest time for McLaren.

Norris clocked a impressive 1:10.278 minutes, edging out Oscar Piastri who finished second for McLaren by a narrow 0.292 seconds. Aston Martin demonstrated strong form, with Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finishing in third and fourth place, respectively.

However, the reigning champion Max Verstappen faced a difficult start, managing only sixth place. Verstappen had a moment at the end of the session, missing the braking point and driving into the gravel with locked front wheels. He had to walk back to the pits after his incident.

George Russell, Verstappen's teammate, also had a close encounter with the gravel at turn one. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz had a similar incident at the end of the back straight.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli experienced understeer issues in turns 7, 8, and 9, resulting in a spin into the gravel in the final slow corner. This incident briefly halted the session as Antonelli's car was stuck in the gravel. Yuki Tsunoda also spun across the track shortly after Hamilton's incident.

Lewis Hamilton had a spin in turn two during the session, damaging his brake pads. The seven-time world champion and Charles Leclerc finished in 14th and 15th place, respectively, nearly 1.7 seconds off the pace.

Alexander Albon in the Williams finished fifth, nearly nine tenths of a second off the pace. Minimal innovations were seen in Zandvoort, with Red Bull slightly revising the front wing and Alpine and Sauber bringing updates for the rear brake duct.

Formula 1 teams are focusing on experienced and talented driver pairings for 2026 to adapt to new regulations. Sauber/Audi has Nico Hülkenberg and rookie Gabriel Bortoleto; Haas confirmed Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon; McLaren keeps Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri; Aston Martin retains Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll; Mercedes plans George Russell (pending signing) and Kimi Antonelli.

The current Formula 1 regulations will only apply for the ten races of the 2025 season, after which teams have shifted their development capacities to 2026 in preparation for the new era.
