Red Bull Faces Balance Issues in Zandvoort, According to Team Principal
Red Bull Racing is grappling with balance issues and high downforce tracks, such as the Zandvoort circuit, according to team principal Dr. Helmut Marko.
The RB21 car has struggled on the Dutch track, with Max Verstappen experiencing oversteer issues, particularly in the middle sector. Despite making minor adjustments to the front wing, the changes have had only marginal effects, and the car's difficult handling remains a concern.
"Our main problem is the balance of the car, especially its unstable handling that can easily tip from understeering to oversteering," Marko explained.
To address these issues, Red Bull has introduced a new working methodology, which involves more motor power in the simulator and on the first training day to better understand and gradually improve the setup. This change is hoped to alleviate some of the problems that surfaced in Hungary, where Verstappen had one of his worst weekends in the ground effect era, according to Marko.
Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda had a relatively good Friday in Zandvoort, placing 7th in FP2. However, Tsunoda needs to find a middle ground between his qualifying trim and long run performance. In FP2, his qualifying trim was good, but his long run wasn't, according to his own statement.
Despite the challenges, Marko remains optimistic that Red Bull's setup will work better on Saturday. He advises waiting for qualifying before reading too much into Tsunoda's performance in Zandvoort, as the young driver continues to struggle without points for seven race weekends.
Max Verstappen, however, is not optimistic about the rest of the weekend, hoping for improvements but not expecting a significant turnaround. The Dutch driver had a poor performance in FP2, losing about three tenths of a second to Lando Norris' McLaren between Turns 7 and 10.
McLaren appears dominant in Zandvoort, similar to Hungary, with the British team clearly superior to other teams at Turn 1. It seems that the track is not suited to Red Bull's car, as Turn 1 and Turn 13 are problematic spots for the team, with Turn 1 not being a Red Bull-specific issue.
As the weekend progresses, Red Bull will need to address these balance issues and find a solution to Verstappen's oversteer problem if they are to challenge for victory in Zandvoort.
