Joe Bugner, a former British and Commonwealth champion, has passed away at the age of 75. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) confirmed his death, and the news has sent shockwaves through the boxing community.
Bugner had a storied 32-year career in boxing, spanning from 1967 to 1999. He participated in a total of 83 professional bouts, of which he won 69. His career ended on a high note, with a six-fight win streak.
Throughout his career, Bugner fought some of the greatest boxers in history. He faced off against Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Earnie Shavers, among others. While he was unable to secure a world championship, he did earn the European title and successfully retained it.
One of his most notable fights was against Muhammad Ali in Las Vegas in 1973. Despite a valiant effort, Bugner was outpointed by the legendary boxer. He also fought Ali again in Malaysia in 1975, but was defeated once more.
Bugner also fought Frazier in London, but was beaten. However, he earned his British and Commonwealth titles by beating Henry Cooper in 1971. He also added the European title to his resume.
Frank Bruno, a fellow British boxer, paid tribute to Bugner, praising his resilience and determination. Hall of Fame boxing promoter Frank Warren also posted a heartfelt tribute, remembering Bugner as a true gentleman and a great ambassador for the sport.
The BBBofC released a statement expressing their condolences to Bugner's family, hailing him as a true legend of British boxing. His legacy will undoubtedly live on, and he will be remembered as one of the greatest British boxers of all time.
