Veteran politician Nadler announces retirement, causing significant gap in Manhattan's political landscape

Rep. Jerry Nadler, who represented New York's 12th Congressional District for 34 years, announced his retirement last week. Since then, several potential candidates have emerged, aiming to fill the vacant seat.

Alex Bores, currently representing the East Side of Manhattan in the New York State Assembly, is one of the contenders. Bores, who won election to the state Legislature in 2022 and is now in his second term, has begun making calls to potential supporters. Bores has gained a reputation for his numerous bills regulating AI technology, having previously worked at the controversial surveillance company Palantir. In a tweet, Bores lauded Nadler's representation.

Assembly Member Micah Lasher is considered Nadler's heir apparent, having worked closely with the retiring Congressman for many years. However, other names are also circulating in the race. City Council Member Keith Powers and Julie Menin, another City Council Member, are potential candidates for the City Council speakership but are also rumoured to be considering a run for Nadler's seat.

State Sen. Liz Krueger is another potential candidate. Known for her work on environmental and consumer protection issues, Krueger could bring a unique perspective to the race.

Erik Bottcher, currently a New York City Council Member, has also announced his intention to carry Nadler's fight forward. In a statement, Bottcher expressed his commitment to continuing Nadler's legacy of advocacy for civil rights, climate change, and social justice.

Lina Khan, former Federal Trade Commission Chair, is another potential candidate. Khan's experience in antitrust enforcement and technology regulation could make her a strong contender.

A lesser-known candidate, Liam Elkind, the 26-year-old founder of a nonprofit organisation, has declared his primary challenge against Rep. Jerry Nadler.

Rep. Jerry Nadler did not endorse a successor on the record. The primary election for the 12th Congressional District is scheduled for June 2023. The race is expected to be intense, with each candidate vying for the opportunity to represent the district and continue the legacy of one of the city's most influential politicians.
