Vienna buses phased out at no cost: retailer shuts down, gifts merchandise

In the heart of Vienna, the "La Bubben" Shop on Mariahilfer Straße has been a hotspot for a popular pop-cultural phenomenon – the colorful plush monsters known as Labubus. However, recent developments have raised suspicions and sparked controversy.

The trendy Labubus, with their cute, rolling eyes and mischievous grins, have gained quite the following. Originating from China in mid-2025, these adorable figures have become more than just a toy for some parents. But, the hype around Labubus has also led to the production and circulation of counterfeits, known as Lafufus.

On September 2nd, the merchandise in the "La Bubben" Shop was sold out within a day. Since then, the shelves in the store have remained mostly empty, and it appears to be closing down. Some speculate that the Labubu hype has ended, while others suspect the closure is related to the sale of counterfeit products.

A TikTok user was seen leaving the "La Bubben" Shop on Mariahilfer Straße with a Labubu, adding fuel to the speculation. The theft of a Labubu worth 7,000 US dollars was also documented on TikTok, further raising concerns about the authenticity of the products being sold.

Interestingly, the "La Bubben" Store has been replaced by a Tchibo branch, leading some to believe that the Labubu craze may have indeed subsided. However, other branches of Labubu Stores, such as those on Kohlmarkt, continue to operate.

The parent company of Labubus, Pop Mart, is actively combating fakes. The closure of the "La Bubben" Store in Vienna may be a result of this ongoing battle against counterfeits. The giving away of remaining Labubu stock in Labubu Stores in Vienna could be a strategy to clear out any potential counterfeits and ensure customers receive genuine products.

As the situation unfolds, it's essential to remember that the Labubus, despite the controversy, continue to bring joy to many. The story of "La Bubben" and the Labubu craze in Vienna serves as a reminder of the power of pop culture and the importance of maintaining integrity in the market.
