Violin prodigy brings Amy Beach's powerful Romance to life in celebratory performance for International Women's Day

In a fitting tribute to International Women's Day 2024, the virtuosic duo of Deniz Sensoy (violinist) and Dina Duisen (pianist) performed Amy Beach's 'Romance' Op.23 at the Purcell Room of London's Southbank Centre.

Deniz Sensoy, a young violinist born in Turkey in 2000, studies at the Royal College of Music in London. She has already made a name for herself, having worked with renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov and receiving the prestigious Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Scholarship.

Dina Duisen, Kazak-British pianist, joined Sensoy for the performance. Duisen, known for her solo piano album Mazurkas from Chopin to AdeΜ€s, added a rich depth to the performance.

The piece, 'Romance' Op.23, showcases Amy Beach's mastery of chamber music and intimate compositions for small ensembles. Beach, a pioneering American composer, was the first woman to have a symphony published in the United States.

The premiere of 'Romance' was given by Maud Powell with Amy Beach at the piano. Powell, a trailblazer in her own right, premiered violin concertos by Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, and Coleridge-Taylor in the United States.

The audience was moved by the performance, demanding a repeat performance after its premiere. 'Romance' Op.23 is anchored by a simple melody that tugs at the heartstrings, demonstrating Beach's ability to create emotionally resonant music.

Beach also composed a piano concerto, choral works, and an opera in one act. On International Women's Day, the website will feature great female composers and performers of classical music history and today, honouring the contributions of women like Amy Beach and Maud Powell.

This performance is a testament to the enduring power of Beach's music and the talent of the performers. It serves as a reminder of the crucial role women have played and continue to play in the classical music world.
