The much-anticipated film, "The Wizard of the Kremlin," is set to make its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025. Directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas in his English language debut, the film is an adaptation of Giuliano da Empoli's bestselling book.

The movie, which is competing for top prizes at the prestigious festival, is a political drama set partially in the early 1990s amid post-Soviet chaos. The film's protagonist, Vadim Baranov, is played by Paul Dano. Interestingly, Baranov's character was inspired by the real-life political strategist Vladislav Sourkov, who was considered the architect of the political system under Putin.

Sourkov, who resigned his post as deputy prime minister in 2013, served as a significant figure in Russian politics. Jude Law portrays Vladimir Putin in the film. Vadim Baranov, a fictional adviser, is said to be loosely based on Sourkov's career and influence.

Production for the film took place in Latvia as filming in Russia was not possible. This political drama is not the only competition at the Venice Film Festival. Other films in the main competition include "Frankenstein," "Bugonia," "The Voice of Hind Rajab," "La Grazia," and "No Other Choice."

In addition to "The Wizard of the Kremlin," the Venice Film Festival is offering coverage of various other entertainment stories. "What to stream in September 2025: 'Chad Powers,' 'Task,' 'Black Rabbit'" is one such story. Another popular entertainment piece is "10 things to do in WA before you die," while "13 things to do around the Seattle area this weekend" is highly-read. "Bumbershoot 2025: What to see and do" and "Splitsville" review: A screwball comedy of infidelity with cinematic verve are also among the most read entertainment stories.
