Volkswagen initiates a new branding approach, with the Polo model leading the way.

Volkswagen AG has unveiled a new naming strategy for its electric vehicles, aiming to carry over familiar designations from combustion engine models to the ID. family. This strategy was announced in a press release by the company.

The first car to be released under this new strategy will be the ID. Polo01, set to hit the market in 2026. Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, head of the core brand group, and a member of the board of management, stated that the company will carry its well-known names into the future.

Schäfer, who is also responsible for the ID. Polo GTI '01 launching in 2026, emphasised that the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI will be just the beginning of the electric vehicles under this new naming strategy. The ID. Polo GTI will offer plenty of dynamics and driving fun, making it an exciting addition to the ID. family.

One of Volkswagen's strongest brands, the GTI, is being brought into the electric world, as Martin Sander, member of the Volkswagen brand board of management, announced. In 2026, the ID. GTI Concept02 study will become a series version with the designation 'ID. Polo GTI'01.

The second future ID. model for the compact car segment will evoke special emotions, as a world premiere will be unveiled on 7th September 2025: the new ID. CROSS Concept01, an electric compact SUV. The series version of the ID. CROSS Concept01, the ID. Cross01, will hit the market at the end of 2026 as the electric counterpart of the T-Cross.

With this new naming strategy, Volkswagen is aiming to keep its model names deeply ingrained in people's minds, standing for qualities like quality, timeless design, and technology for everyone. The ID. Polo, ID. Polo GTI, ID. Cross01, and future electric models under this strategy are set to make a significant impact on the electric vehicle market.

The public will have the opportunity to see the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI for the first time at the IAA MOBILITY in Munich, from 8th to 14th September 2025. These exciting new additions to the ID. family are sure to captivate audiences and demonstrate Volkswagen's commitment to electric mobility.
