Volkswagen reveals preliminary images of a compact electric sport utility vehicle
Volkswagen Unveils Concept Drawing for ID. Cross, Compact Electric SUV
Volkswagen has revealed a concept drawing of its upcoming compact electric SUV, named the ID. Cross. The production model is expected to launch at the end of 2026, serving as an electric replacement for the current T-Cross.
The concept drawing showcases a two-seater design with prominent SUV features, including a continuous light strip at the front and rear, as well as a roof rack. The ID. Cross is based on the upcoming production version of the ID.2all, but it is expected to be more expensive and feature more advanced specifications.
In line with Volkswagenโs continued use of the ID. branding for their electric vehicle lineup, which started in 2018, the compact electric SUV was earlier referred to as the ID.2X. However, the company has expressed its desire to move away from independent designations for its electric cars, and the final name may be different.
The production version of the compact SUV is said to surpass the ID.2all concept in terms of design and functionality. Customers will have the choice between two battery sizes: 38 or 58 kWh. The larger battery option is said to offer a range of up to 450 kilometers according to the local WLTP standard.
Inside, the ID. Cross is expected to be equipped with a 12.9-inch infotainment system and a 10.9-inch driver display. The compact electric SUV is intended to combine the spaciousness of a Golf with the affordability of a Polo and appeal to a broad range of buyers.
Volkswagen confirmed the introduction of the compact electric SUV in 2024, with a first teaser of the ID. Cross released at the end of 2023. The new compact electric car, the ID.2X, is expected to start at an entry price of around 30,000 euros.
It's worth noting that Volkswagen is also planning a small car known as the ID.1, which is expected to cost around 20,000 euros and will not be an electric replacement for the current T-Cross.
As the design process progresses, the ID. Cross may become less distinctive and may gain two more doors before production. The compact electric SUV is expected to have front-wheel drive and be powered by a single motor.
Stay tuned for more updates on the ID. Cross as it moves closer to its 2026 launch.
