Volkswagen's armored vehicle receives a bold motto from metal band Institutions Greenberg in excitement!
The VW plant in Osnabrück, Germany, is facing an uncertain future as discussions about a potential shift from car production to defense production are underway.
According to recent reports, the plant may cease car production by 2027, with Porsche model production ending in 2026 and VW T-Roc Cabrio production ending mid-2027. As of now, no follow-up order for car production exists.
The union IG Metall, however, views this not as a plant closure, but as a shift from automotive manufacturing to other work. They emphasise that such a move is preferable to unemployment.
Rheinmetall, a defense company, has shown interest in the Osnabrück site, visiting the plant and discussing the potential production of military vehicle cabins there. If Rheinmetall requires additional capacity, Osnabrück could become a future location for the company.
The union is open to this alternative use, as it could help preserve jobs, despite the existing agreement with VW to avoid plant closures and layoffs. IG Metall stresses that a shift from car production to defense production should be from "good to good work" rather than leading to unemployment.
The situation remains tense for the plant's employees, with IG Metall putting pressure on VW to secure long-term jobs beyond 2027. The debate about a possible defense production at the VW plant in Osnabrück is causing heated discussions.
At present, there are no concrete steps in the open discussion between Volkswagen and Rheinmetall. The union and the company are in active negotiations, and the future of the plant remains uncertain.
