In the heart of Germany, the future of the Volkswagen (VW) plant in Osnabrück is shrouded in uncertainty. With the production of the VW T-Roc Cabrio set to end in mid-2027 and the production of Porsche models concluding in 2026, around 2,300 employees are waiting for a decision about the site's future.

Recently, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger confirmed the consideration of the Osnabrück VW plant for potential defense production. This development, if realised, could potentially see the plant cease car production by the end of 2027.

The possibility of the VW plant in Osnabrück becoming a defense production hub is being discussed as a potential solution for the target agreements. However, a follow-up order for the plant is still pending, adding to the uncertainty about the site's future.

IG Metall, the powerful German trade union, is putting pressure on VW to provide clear long-term job perspectives. Thorsten Gröger, the union's chief, stated that a change in production from one product to another is not considered a closure. He, however, described the potential closure of the VW plant in Osnabrück as "painful".

The negotiations between VW and IG Metall regarding the possible use of the Osnabrück plant for Rheinmetall's defense product manufacturing are ongoing but not concrete. IG Metall does not consider alternative production a plant closure and emphasizes the need for a reliable perspective for workers beyond 2027. On the other hand, VW and Rheinmetall are having open-ended discussions following Rheinmetall's interest and a site visit.

Rheinmetall could use the Osnabrück plant's capacities if additional production capabilities are needed. The union IG Metall hints that using the site for defense contractor Rheinmetall could be a possibility. Gröger emphasized Volkswagen's duty to provide a reliable perspective for Osnabrück employees beyond 2027.

The debate about the possible defense production at the Osnabrück plant is causing heated discussions. Some see it as a potential solution to secure jobs, while others view it as a taboo breach. Regardless, the decision will have a significant impact on the lives of the employees at the plant and the local economy.

As the negotiations continue, the employees of the VW plant in Osnabrück wait with bated breath for a decision that will shape their future.
