Volkswagen's Most Desirable Hybrid SUV Remains Unavailable for Purchase in the United States
Volkswagen AG has announced the release of the second-generation T-Roc, eight years after the debut of the first model. The compact SUV, produced at Volkswagen's plant in Palmela, Portugal, is set to hit European roads by the end of November, following pre-sales starting at the end of August.
The T-Roc's design takes inspiration from Volkswagen's family of electric vehicles, with a larger body and a fully overhauled interior that matches the standards set by the Tiguan and Tayron. The exterior boasts a more dynamic look, while the interior uses higher-quality materials and ambient lighting, providing more room for taller passengers.
Sustainability is a key focus in the interior of the new T-Roc, with about 20 percent of the interior plastics sourced from recycled materials. The luggage capacity has increased to 465 liters (16.4 cubic feet), an increase of 20 liters, ensuring ample space for passengers' belongings.
Powertrain choices for the T-Roc now include gasoline, mild-hybrid, and Volkswagen's first-ever full-hybrid. The new full-hybrid system pairs the 1.5-liter TSI evo2 with an electric module and lithium-ion battery under the rear seats. Two outputs will be available, 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) or 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS), each producing 306 Nm (225 lb-ft) of torque. This new system offers improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, making the T-Roc a more eco-friendly SUV option.
The launch lineup for the T-Roc includes two mild-hybrid versions of the 1.5-liter eTSI engine, each paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission and supported by a 48V system. Optional features include an ergoActive seat with 14-way electrical adjustments and a massaging function, and a Harman Kardon audio system for an enhanced in-car experience.
Safety features have also been upgraded in the new T-Roc. The SUV now includes a new exit warning system and Park Assist Pro, which allows fully automatic parking to a distance of up to 50 m (164 feet) with an optional memory function. The T-Roc's ADAS system has been upgraded, featuring a new version of the Travel Assist system that supports automatic lane changes and improved predictive control for speed limits.
The wheelbase of the T-Roc grows by 28 mm (1.1 inches) to 2,631 mm, providing a smoother ride and improved handling. The T-Roc now measures 4,373 mm (172.1 inches) in length, 122 mm longer than before, ensuring a more spacious interior.
In 2023, Volkswagen delivered 292,000 examples of the T-Roc, making it the brand's second most popular SUV after the Tiguan. With its enhanced features, focus on sustainability, and improved safety, the new T-Roc is set to continue its success in the SUV market.
